Knock Me a Kiss
Written by Charles Smith
Directed by Dwain A. Perry
April 5 - May 4
In the midst of the Harlem Renaissance, W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the greatest intellects of the 20th Century, was busy establishing his legacy. Disapproving his daughter's choice of a musician as a future husband, Dr. Du Bois asserted his right to choose the man she should marry, someone capable of meeting Du Bois' empahsis on class and status. Poet Countee Cullen was his choice, a man he believed to be part of The Talented Tenth, a man who would make the perfect husband for daughter Yolande. The union was to be "The Marriage of the Century". But it was trouble before it started.

"Finding Our Place"
Uncovering History Using Historic Markers
The markers in Biddy Mason Park in downtown Los Angeles honor Bridget "Biddy" Mason, an African American slave brought to California, who was later emancipated and moved to Los Angeles. Here she became a well-known nurse, philanthropist, wealthy landowner, and sponsored the first African Methodist Episcopal Church in the city, which is still active today.
The stories, incidents, and characters introduced during this workshop series will become part of our collective story. Our Artist-in-Residence Levy Lee Simon, will determine how the stories will be used in the final play being developed about Central Avenue and the Dunbar Hotel.
No prior experience writing is required. To successfully complete this workshop, all you need is A Willingness to Follow your Creative Spirit!
The event is free of charge! Light refreshments will be provided.
