Black Wall Street Festival “Double V”

Double V, a short play by Levy Lee Simon (extracted from his full-length play The Magnificent Dunbar Hotel). It’s 1942, and Paul Robeson, Chester Himes, W.E.B. DuBois, and other members of the Black community convene at the famed Dunbar Hotel in Los Angeles to debate whether Blacks should join the U.S. Armed Services and fight in World War Two. Why should Blacks volunteer for combat after whites perpetrated the Black Wall Street Massacre?

 
 

2021 Virtual Birthday Paul Robeson Birthday Celebration

The inaugural Paul Robeson Birthday Celebration held virtually on Friday, April 9, 2021.

 Paul Robeson (1898-1976), actor, singer, athlete, civil rights activist, and humanitarian is the inspiration for The Robey Theatre Company and the man from whom The Robey gets its name.

Othello by William Shakespeare

Othello is the only one of Shakespeare’s plays to have a Black central character at  its focus. The main characters include Othello, a celebrated Moorish general in the  Venetian army; Desdemona, his beautiful and loyal Venetian wife; and Iago, his trusted  but treacherous ensign. Themes include jealousy, envy, and racism, and how they  threaten to destroy everyone in their path.

Kwanzaa Playwrights Reading

Zoom presentation of seven scenes from ideas for plays with a  Kwanzaa theme. Each scene is four to five minutes in duration and will be read by actors.  Following the readings, your feedback and opinions will play an important part in The  Robey considering and making a choice of the play that will be developed, produced and  premiered in the 2021 holiday season. The featured playwrights include: Sharnell  Blevins; Nui Brown; Julio Hanson; Marie Y. Lemelle and Barbara Bullen; Lorinda  Hawkins Smith; Ella Turenne; and Simone Anika Wilson.

Pre-Kwanzaa and Christmas and Virtual Celebration

Festivities include musical performances by some of your favorite Robey artists including Cydney Wayne Davis, Julio Hanson, Marva Smith, plus the Hearts On Fire Choir, and young artists of The Amazing Grace Conservatory. There will also be comedy performances by Jason Mimms, Vanja Renee and Stevie Mack. By submitting a one page treatment for an idea of a Kwanzaa Holiday play . One or more works will, following an evaluation, be read to  our constituency during the celebration and with their input, one idea will be chosen to be developed and produced on the Robey stage.

REVOLUTIONARY GENOCIDE (Virtual Reading)

The narrative concerns events in the lives of attorney and activist William  Lorenzo Patterson (portrayed by Glover) and actor and activist Paul Robeson (played by  Guillory) who presented papers to the United Nations in 1951, accusing the U.S.A. of the attempted genocide of Black Americans, due to its failure to pass legislation against  lynching and its failure to bring its perpetrators to justice.

Ben Guillory is the Producing Artistic Director of The Robey Theatre Company and Instructor for Robey’s Advanced Scene Study Workshop.
